Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Kick off the holiday season with the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® in New York City. The Parade first debut in 1924, as a way to celebrate the expansion of Macy’s Manhattan store and unveil the store’s Christmas window displays. The parade was such a success that Macy’s decided to make it an annual event calling it the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1927.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was broadcast for the first time in 1932, but the broadcast was radio-only. Listeners had to use their imaginations. The first televised parade took place in 1946 and was limited to the New York area. Now, each year, more than 3.5 million people in NYC and more than 50 million people at home watch the Parade.
